Valentine’s Day in Vicenza

February, with its cold temperatures and often gray sky, invites people to melt into warm embraces and expressions of affection. It is the month of love, the time when Valentine's Day is celebrated, with origins dating back in history.

In the era of the Roman Empire, on 15th February, Lupercalia was celebrated in honor of the god Lupercus, the protector of crops and livestock. On the eve of this day, young women would place a small note with their name written on it in a jar, which would then be drawn by unmarried young men. The couples formed in this way would be inseparable for the entire duration of Lupercalia, enjoying dances and songs.

After centuries, this celebration still holds the strong meaning of celebrating true love, and experiencing it in Vicenza is a truly special treat.

Tradition in Vicenza

In Vicenza, there is a particular tradition on Valentine's Day that we hold dear. For over 5 centuries, celebrations in honor of Saint Valentine have taken place in the Basilica of Saints Felice and Fortunato in Vicenza, with the intention of attracting good omens.

According to tradition, Felice and Fortunato, originally from Vicenza, lived in the late 3rd century AD in Aquileia and were martyred because they refused to renounce their Christian faith. Devotion to the two martyrs spread rapidly in Vicenza, leading to the dedication of a basilica in their honor. In this place of worship, a relic of Saint Valentine, the patron saint of lovers, is preserved and displayed on February 14th every year. If you happen to be in Vicenza on the day of love, make sure to admire it.

Romantic itineraries

In addition to visiting the Basilica of Saints Felice and Fortunato, Vicenza offers many highly romantic itineraries to be walked hand in hand with your loved one. You could start at Villa Valmarana ai Nani, a charming place steeped in magic. According to the story, the daughter of the noble owner of the villa suffered from dwarfism, and her parents decided to surround her only with gnomes so she wouldn't feel different. One day, a handsome prince arrived at the villa, and the girl fell in love with him, but her love was not reciprocated. Desperate, she committed suicide by throwing herself from the tallest tower. All her gnomes remained petrified in grief. That's why, in the garden and on the enclosing wall, you'll notice many gnome statues still watching over the sleeping girl.

Continuing towards the Rotonda, you will reach the Valletta del Silenzio, loved by Fogazzaro and today a destination for romantic moonlit walks.

The quintessential love story unfolded in Verona, the stage of Romeo and Juliet. Not far from Vicenza is the village of Montecchio, where the Castles of Romeo and Juliet stand, observing each other from the peaks of two opposing hills. According to popular legend, Luigi da Porto, who probably wrote the first draft of what Shakespeare made the famous drama Romeo and Juliet, was inspired by these two castles that stood not far from his villa in Montorso Vicentino.

Orgiano could be the last stop on your Valentine's tour: here, you can immerse yourself in the atmosphere of "The Betrothed”, an icon of passionate love. In this village, located in the lower Vicenza area, a trial took place involving an arrogant provincial nobleman, supported by criminals, who, along with his cousin, harassed the local girls, tormenting them to the point of violating them. The documentation of the trial of this Paolo Orgiano presents surprising analogies with Manzoni's story, to the extent that this document could be the "washed-out manuscript" that the writer referred to as his source.
